Isuzu . Directions to Replace the Alternator on a 2000 Dodge StratusThe 2000 Stratus was Dodge's entry into the mid-size sedan class. The interior is roomy, thanks to Dodge's "cab-forward" design. The Stratus was available with three different engines in 2000. The entry-level SE had either a 2.0 liter or a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine, while the upscale ES came equipped with a 2.5-liter V-6 engine. All three engine packages came standard with a 90-amp alternator, while a 125-amp heavy-duty alternator was also available. No matter which engine package or alternator your Stratus has, the process of changing the alternator is the same. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Wrench set Battery terminal cleaner Ratchet Socket set Phillips screwdriver Chalk Prybar Replacement alternator Step by Step : 1 Remove both battery cables from the battery, using the correct wrench to turn the nuts on the terminals counterclockwise. Use the battery terminal and post cleaner to clean the cable ends and the battery posts thoroughly. 2 Remove the passenger-side inner splash shield. This may be attached to the inner fender with push clips, small bolts or screws requiring removal with either a socket and ratchet or Phillips screwdriver. 3 Remove the wire from the alternator terminal labeled "Batt" using a socket and ratchet. Remove the field connector by squeezing the lock tab and pulling straight out of the connector. 4 Loosen the pivot and adjuster bolts on the alternator -- the adjuster or tensioner on the 2.5-liter engine -- by turning the bolts counterclockwise with a socket and ratchet. Mark the outside edge of the alternator belt with the chalk. On the 2.5-liter engine, remove the power steering belt first, by loosening the pivot and adjusting bolts, pushing the pump towards the center of the engine and removing the belt. 5 Remove the pivot and adjusting bolts and lift the alternator out. On cars equipped with cruise control, remove the vacuum line from the speed control module and remove the two mounting bolts with a socket and ratchet. Move the module out of the way. 6 Install the new alternator, the pivot and adjuster bolts. Install the alternator belt, ensuring the chalk line is on the outer edge. On the four-cylinder engines, pry the alternator away from the engine using the pry bar, tighten the adjuster and pivot bolts. On the 2.5-liter engine, tighten the adjuster and pivot bolts, then the tensioner bolt until the belt will only twist 1/4 to 1/3 of the way around. Torque pivot and adjuster bolts between 40 and 45 foot-pounds. If you have access to a belt tension gauge, tension the belt to 150 pounds for a new belt or 80 pounds for a used belt. 7 Replace the inner splash shield. 8 Reconnect the alternator "Batt" and field connectors. If the cruise control module was moved to access the alternator bolts, replace it where you removed it from. 9 Replace both battery terminals one at a time. Tap the terminals onto the posts with the ratchet handle to fully seat the terminal and tighten the nuts with a wrench. Start the engine and allow it to run for 5 to 10 minutes and shut it down. Verify proper tension on the alternator belt. Tips & Warnings Using a belt-tension gauge, the measurement is in pounds, because it describes the number of pounds of draw strength required to cause a deflection in the belt. Too much tension on any of the belts can cause premature accessory failure by causing bearing failure.
Isuzu . How to Replace a 1997 Geo Prizm Timing BeltThe 1997 Geo Prizm came with two engines: the 1.6-liter and the 1.8-liter engine. Both use the same timing belt procedure, and both are interference engines, which means that the valve-to-piston clearance is so close that the timing belt must be installed with the engine perfectly in time, else the valves will hit the pistons. The belt, made with a highly saturated nitrile, is 936 mm long and has a round-tooth, flat tip profile. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Set of sockets Floor jack Jack stands Lug wrench Crankshaft pulley holding tool no. J-8614-01 Crankshaft pulley puller tool no. J-1859-03 Torque wrench Step by Step : 1 Remove the accessory drive belts by loosening the bolt on the adjusting bracket. Push the accessory in toward the engine loosen tension, then lift the belts off the pulleys. Remove the windshield washer reservoir, using the appropriate socket. Unclip the engine wiring harness connector from the top of the timing belt cover and move it aside. 2 Break the lug nuts loose on the right wheel, using the lug wrench. Jack up the vehicle, using the floor jack, then support it with jack stands. Remove the right front wheel, using the lug wrench. Remove the right splash guard, using the appropriate socket. 3 Remove the engine mount nut and stud protectors, using the appropriate socket. Remove the rear trans-axle mount-to-main cross-member nuts and center trans-axle mount-to-center cross-member nuts, using the appropriate socket. 4 Hold the crankshaft pulley with the crankshaft pulley holding tool, then remove the crankshaft pulley bolt, using the appropriate socket. Remove the crankshaft pulley, using the crankshaft pulley puller. Support the engine with the floor jack. Remove the valve cover and timing belt upper cover, using the appropriate sockets. 5 Remove the right engine mount through-bolt and the water pump pulley, using the appropriate socket. Reinstall the crankshaft pulley. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley lines up with the mark on the cover at the 1 o'clock position. If the timing mark on the camshaft is not lined up at the 12 o'clock position, turn the engine via the crankshaft pulley one more revolution, and it will line up. 6 Remove the crankshaft pulley. Remove the center and lower timing belt covers, and the belt guide washer, using the appropriate socket. Ensure that the timing marks are still lined up. Loosen the tensioner pulley bolt, then rotate the tensioner away from the belt. Retighten the bolt just enough to hold the tensioner in place. Lift the timing belt off the pulleys. Remove the tensioner pulley and spring, using the appropriate sockets. Check that the timing marks are still aligned. 7 Check the tensioner pulley by spinning it in your hand. If there is resistance or a grinding or squeaking noise, replace the tensioner pulley. Measure the length of the tensioner spring. If it is not 1.45 inches, replace it. 8 Install the tensioner pulley and spring. Push the tensioner pulley toward the left as far as it will go. Lightly tighten the bolt. Ensure that the timing marks are still lined up. Install the timing belt, starting with the crankshaft sprocket and working your way counterclockwise over the top of the camshaft and behind the tensioner pulley. Keep tension on belt between the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. 9 Loosen the tensioner bolt and allow the tensioner to put tension on the belt. Turn the crankshaft clockwise two turns until the timing marks line up again. Tighten the tensioner bolt to 27 foot-pounds of torque. Press on the belt halfway between the crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket with a force of 4.4 pounds. It should deflect 0.20 to 0.24 inch. If not, repeat the belt installation procedure. Step by Step : 10 Reinstall the rest of the components in reverse order of removal. Hold the crankshaft pulley with the crankshaft holding tool and tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to 87 foot-pounds of torque. *8. Allow the engine to cool and then drain the water out of the system into the bucket again. Pour that water into a closed container for disposal. 9. Refill the system with water and coolant. See "Determining how much coolant you need," earlier in this chapter. The liquid should reach the "Max" line on the coolant recovery reservoir. If it doesn't, add equal parts water and coolant until it does. 10. Replace the pressure cap and run the engine with the heater on high until the temperature gauge reads in the normal range. This step disperses the water and coolant evenly throughout the system. 11. 687

Mitsubishi Lancer. * You can buy products for cleaning the cooling system during the flushing process. These products remove rust and sediment that flushing with plain water can't. If your cooling system has been cleaned regularly and you want to clean it yourself, buy a well-known brand and follow the instructions on the package carefully. Chapter 14: Keeping Your Car from Getting Heartburn Be aware that using a cleaner on a system that has years of built-up rust and sediment can free so much of the stuff that you run the risk of clogging your radiator or thermostat, or possibly loosening the deposits that have prevented the system from leaking. If your vehicle's cooling system hasn't been cleaned for a couple of years, have the system flushed, cleaned, and refilled professionally. Keeping coolant out of the mouthsof babes and small animals Anyone who has raised kids through the crawling and toddling stages knows that they tend pick up the most revolting stuff off the ground and put it into their mouths. Because coolant looks and tastes good, a puddle of the stuff can be hazardous. That goes double for thirsty cats, dogs, and wildlife. Most coolant contains ethylene glycol, which is poisonous when swallowed. According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), this chemical causes depression, followed by respiratory and cardiac failure, kidney damage, and brain damage. Although no coolant is completely nontoxic, some coolants on the market contain propylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol to reduce their toxicity. At least one (Prestone LowTox) has received the Seal of Approval from the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). However, even if you use this type of coolant, be sure to follow the instructions in this section. Take these steps to protect your pets and small children from accidentally drinking coolant: 1. Make it a habit to check under your vehicle for coolant leaks. If you find a puddle of colored liquid below the under-the-hood area — and it isn't oily — it's probably coolant. Isuzu .
